6.3 SCHOOL REFORM
The organisation of Italian school has been recently modified with a reform approved by the Italian parliament on march 12th 2003.
The reform states that:
- the right to accede to education and formation is granted for 12 years for everybody, or however till the achievement of a some degree within the age of 18.
- the educational and formation system is organised with:
- The infancy school (children from 3 to 5 years old)
- The first education cycle, which includes the Primary school and the 1st degree of the secondary school (children from 6 to 13 years old)
- The second education cycle, which includes the "licei" system and the system of professional forming
6.3.1 INFANCY SCHOOL
In the infancy school can be registered, with a gradual and experimental criterion, the children who will be 3 years old within the april of the school year.
Upon registration following documents must be presented:
- registration request;
- declaration that certifies date of birth and residence of the child;
- vaccination certificate;
- identity document of a parent;

6.3.2 FIRST EDUCATION CYCLE
The first education cycle is formed by the primary school (lasting 5 years) and the 1st degree secondary school (3 years), both with their specific form. The primary school is organized with a first year which should bring to reach basic instruments and then with two didactical periods; the secondary school is organised in a period of two years and then of one more year which complete the trajectory in order to orientate and connect it with the second education cycle.
Can be registered children at the age of 6 within the august, but can be registered children that will be 6 years old within the april of the school year.
For the registration the procedure is the same of the infancy school but after the first year there's an automatic registration for the following years. Schools are open by the month of September to the half of june with different timings in consequence of different teaching programs.

6.3.3 SECOND EDUCATION CYCLE
The second cycle is formed by the liceo (high-school) system on one hand and by the professional education and formation. At the age of 15 each graduation can be obtained alternating school and work or with the apprenticeship. The liceo system includes different school addresses: artistic, classical, economic. linguistic, musical, scientific, technological, human sciencies. Artistic, economic and technological addresses are organized to respond to different formation needs. The liceo lasts 5 years and the didactical activity is developed within two periods of two years and then with a fifth year to complete the program.
The liceo is concluded by a State examination which gives the right to the access to the university and to high formation education for artistic musical and coreutic studies. The admission to the fifth year allows to the access to the superior technical formation and education.
It is possible to change the studying address from the liceo system to the system of professional education and formation and viceversa.
In order to know which schools are in each town it is possible to ask information to the School Administrative Centre (CSA, once Provveditorato agli Studi) in every province. It is also possible to ask for information to the secretary of each school, where it is possible to obtain information about registrations. It is also possible to have information by the comune, the circoscrizione, the school unions.
