The rent contract is the act with which the owner of a house concedes in use his/her place against payment of a monthly sum. A rent contract must be registered at competent Registry Office for two reasons:

For the assignment of a Casa popolare (Council House - House that is property of the Comune with a very low rent), it is necessary to present request to the Azienda Territoriale Edilizia Residenziale (ATER, once IACP) at the time in which announcement of assignment is made. This announcement can be found at the territory competent ATER Office or at the Comune.

Reception centres are structures that supply temporary accommodation, mostly free, to those foreigners who have no house or money to pay rent.
For foreigners there also exist social accommodations, collective or private, predisposed by Comuni, Provinces, Regions or voluntary associations. They are prevalently centres organised in the form of hostels, open to Italians and foreigners, with the aim to offer a dignified accommodation at not too high prices.
