7.2 THE CULTURAL MEDIATOR

Generally the cultural mediator is a foreigner to whom is given the task of facilitating daily life, the understanding of the country's organisation, the access to public services, the possibility to express and communicate in Italy for foreigners, and to supply all information that may be useful for the foreigner, translating the language of origin and the underlying culture. At the same time cultural mediator must promote occasions of cultural exchange and mutual knowledge between different cultures; he/she is a sort of bridge between cultures that may transform the experience of migration in an opportunity for acknoledgement both for migrants and for the people of the reception country. In many public institutions, particularly in the health sector foreigner mediators, particularly if women, organized courses for Italian workers, helping them to know the culture of the women users of the services, the anthropological and symbolic significance of birth and pregnancy in many traditional cultures, also helping foreigner women in living in a more human way their permanence in Italy, their child-birth, their children care.

This figure was instituted with a regional law. To become a cultural mediator, it is necessary to attend a course organised by the Region.

In recent years courses to form cultural mediators have been organized in many universities.
